After releasing a successful recording of the Goldberg Variations in 2015, Rozenboom has now made new recordings (double CD) featuring only Schubert repertoire.
Rozenboom is a huge Schubert fan; he grew up with it, thanks to his father and grandfather, who had the entire piano repertoire at their fingertips from an early age.
He has been playing the impromptus and dances since he was 10 years old, and now, after 30 years of ‘maturing’, they have gained extra depth.
These recordings are unique because Rozenboom took the time to optimize the sound of his instrument in a space with excellent acoustics, namely the chapel of the Mariadalklooster in Roosendaal. He was allowed to work there every day for two months, and the result is an interpretation in which the tone and pedal use are completely adapted to the acoustics of the chapel.
A year before the recordings, he started working with piano technician Charles Rademaker to get the grand piano to sound exactly as he wanted. The mechanism was completely readjusted and the piano was tuned several times until the optimal sound was achieved.
From a very lyrical Schubert in Liszt’s song transcriptions and a subdued Schubert in the four impromptus opus 90 to a frivolous Schubert in more than 20 frivolous dances to a virtuoso, extroverted Schubert in the Wanderer Fantasy.
